Protest Poem #2: On Behalf of Whales

Susan DeFProtest PoemsLeave a Comment

Last week was the closest I have ever come–my husband and I stood watching along the Pacific coast as three or four whales turned flips, close enough for us to see bumps and barnacles, glistening.

*
Friends, let us not consent to despair.

*
Let us not give up on the Great Barrier Reef, on the songbirds, the bees, and the whales.

*
We may be tired of fighting, but we are closer to victory than ever before.

*
E. O. Wilson has suggested that if we can just get through the bottleneck–that tight spot between ecological collapse and the rise of clean tech–we will survive, and so will they.

*
Friends, may it be so.

*
May our children stand in awe at the Pacific coast, as Daniel and I did, in October of 2016.

*
May they know whales, one of the great wonders of this world.
